COVID 19 and Your Pre-Kindergartener
This is an uncertain time for all of us; teachers, parents and students. There is so much we don't know but one of the big question is when will life return to normal for all of us. All this uncertainty causes anxiety, not just for the adults, but for the children as well. When children are anxious, they have a harder time learning and are more likely to engage in negative behavior. Here are some ways to help your child manage their anxiety and feelings about everything that is happening.
-
It is not unusual for children to become "clingy" or regress and show separation anxiety. Allow them to be close to you if needed. Once they are feeling more secure again, they will return to being the independent person they were before this started.
-
Attempt (as much as possible) to provide them with a general routine for the day.
-
Acknowledge their feelings and let them know that their feelings are okay. This is a big change and they may be feeling lots of things at once. Help them label those feelings and find a positive outlet for them. Share your feelings too in an age appropriate way.
-
Remember that the BEST academic thing you can do for them is let them create and play.
-
Do not let home learning add to your stress. Stressed parents means stressed kids. As much as possible, find time to enjoy being with your child.
