Learning at Home is a great way to reinforce what your child is learning in school or to expand on their growing set of skills. Here are a few things to know before you get started .
-
Pre-kindergartener's brains are primed to play. In fact, play is the single most important thing they can do. When they are playing, all all parts of their brain are active. Never underestimate the value of "just playing"
-
We have chosen many of the activities here to take advantage of their natural desire to play and to provide activities that will work for a wide variety of learners. The activities can be scaled up for a child who needs more and scaled back for a child who need less.
-
Many of these activities can be done without much adult help. You do not need to engage with them at all times. In fact, allowing them to briefly struggle on a hard task is okay, but be there to help before they get overwhelmed.
-
These activities should be fun for them (and you). If your child is upset or fighting you are completing an activity, skip it. Many of the activities build the same skill set so skipping an activity or two will not delay their skill development
-
Minimize the use of screens whenever possible, but there are lots of educational programming online if your child is using a device.
-
There is no right way to work with your child at home. If it works for you and your child, it is the right way for you.
-
It is okay to let them PLAY- it's what they are supposed to be doing at this age.
