Math

Math in PreK is comprised of many skills-  but one of the main skills in PreK Math is counting.  There are two different skills that we look at when teaching counting.
Rote counting is the ability to say the numbers in correct order.  By the end of preK, most kids are able to rote count from 1-20.
Object counting (or counting with one to one(1:1) correspondence is the part of counting.  1:1 counting is the ability to know that one number goes with one object.  For example 1 block, 2 blocks, 3 blocks.  Each block gets one number.  This is how you determine the number of object you have.  State standards are that by the end of preK a child can accurately count 10 objects, although many kids can count objects up to 20.

Although you will find some counting resources here, some of the best ways to help teach your preschooler their numbers are easy and simple.

  • Look at your mail, your remote control, the telephone-   What numbers do you see?

  • Help your child count while cooking a meal.  They can count as you add ingredients or count out the quantity of things you need.

  • While playing outside, count your jumps, the cracks on the sidewalk, the steps in your house

  • Look out the window- count what you see (cars, people, trees, signs, anything you can see can be counted)

COUnting VIDEOS

Sesame Street Stomp

Sesame Street Stomp is a fun movement song that starts on zero and goes to 20 one number at a time (in order)  The whole video is about 25 minutes to watch from 0 to 20.  You can skip ahead to numbers your child might need extra help with or watch it in sections. (a bonus is there is also a little bit of rhyming in the song as well)
